to make the big move and declared would it strike but the bridge district said fine and made a big move and said we're going to cancel service entirely. negotiations have been going on since november 2009. the union is upset because 16 ticket agents are going to be replaced by ticket machines next week the bridge district is trying to close a gap of $89 million. they decided shutting down service would be the right thing to do, to cut to the chase and let the customers know because they figured other unions wouldn't want to cross the line but the employees were disappointed. >> we would appreciate it if they would focus more on the employees and 34 years of service and treating them in a way they can leave the judge but to disrespect them and cast them off in hopes we won't make a ruckus as we leave july 8th. >> i think our organization has an excellent track record in what we but put on the table. >> reporter: bridge officials are offering to reassign the workers that is being replaced by machines. hopefully the number of people that will be impacted will be smaller than usual. if you

:05, happening as we speak, a big sink hole on highway 87 in san jose. that's right along the southbound side of the highway near west virginia street. work crews are out there and so is ktvu tara moyarti but what's the very latest? >> workers workers will not continue work until engineers arrive. we had to move because it was simply too dangerous. you can see where they've blocked out one southbound lane of 87 on the left and then one lane of alma avenue on the right. the sink hole is about 30 feet wide. there's a big gap underneath the median. now caltrans discovered the problem tuesday. they came out. they poured some gravel. sort of a band aid fix. and last night they compressed the gravel and found it sank. you can see where the concrete is exposed now. there's a huge crack running up and down on that roadway. they shutdown some lanes on the freeway. we are close to west virginia street. just to give you an idea where we are on 87. crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sink hole. damage is pretty extensive. the highway seems to be moving up. right now let's check i

tomorrow. the air quality management district is expecting unhealthy conditions. if you are big 4th of july plans, prepare for the heat. lisa is here with exactly what you can expect today. >> hi, carolyn. for the 4th of july, tomorrow we are expecting patchy fog. if you are headed into san francisco, a bit of a relief tomorrow night. as for today we have the heat advisory in effect because already temperatures are warmer than we were yesterday. it's 63 in fremont. 60 redwood city. just a couple 50s and already 71 in antioch. so numbers this morning anywhere from two to five degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. so we are starting out warmer. in fact, right now in the upper levels of the atmosphere, above 2,000 feet, we are talking 80 degrees. so we will be look at the heat advisory everywhere except for the coast. even though our coast will top out today warmer than yesterday, around 70 degrees. but we will be flirting with 100 in some of our inland valleys. a look at the full forecast for the entire bay area coming up in a bit. >> thank you, lisa. in other news this morning, san jos

in the crash and east bay, car smashes into the back of a big rig. the accident happened after 2:00 this morning on westbound 580 at the scales in livermore. you've got to check out this video. the car ended up wedged underneath the back side of this big rig of the rig then dragged the car for several hundred yards before it stopped. medics airlifted one person to the hospital via helicopter. all lanes reopen before 5:00 this morning. >>> a new study out this morning suggests major budget cuts are causing big problems in policing some east bay cities. that's doubling response times in some cases. . he said he saw two faces and two big sets of eyes. the two men on board were killed. it happened at 7:30 last night. plane crashed into a medical office building narrowly missing the main hospital building here at the watsonville community hospital. >>> the blilgs department but no one was there except for the people that were actually on the plane. >> reporter: here a close-up shot. faa will be on scene to take a close look at the crash scene but no cause has been identified yet. witnesses say it was foggy at the time. the plane had just taken off from the watsonville municipal airport. it's registered under two men but names were not released. hospital was not affected by the crash so hospital workers were able to continue caring for their patients. >>> this morning, survivors of a capsized fishing boat in mexico are expected back home in the bay area. at the same time family members of the seven men still missing are hoping they will have a reuin yoon in the near future. nick smith joins us. >> it's been tough for the families. 16 of the remaining 19 american survivors have crossed

some big financial problems. the agency says it lost $8 billion last year. part of it is because of the recession, there has been a steep decline in advertising mail but there's also a lot of first class mail that is now being sent electronically and packages are being carried bid private carriers. the postal service says it will consider opening village offices. postoffice desks and counters that would be placed inside businesses, town halls and community centers. postal service is expected to -- across the country for possible closure. we don't know yet which bay area postoffices may be on that list or how many of them. but about 10 minutes ago i did get a response from a u.s. postal service spokesperson in washington, d.c. she said at 10:30 eastern time they're going to be sending out that list of the 3,600 postoffices. so 10:30 eastern time so about an hour and a half from now for our pacific time. we should get that list and take a look at it to see how this is going to affect postal service here in the bay area. allie rasmus. >>> time now 6:08. the stand off in washington i

accident a big rig thankfully it is already been cleared from the freeway little backup has been developing on the southbound lane it is creating a little bit of a backups in the southbound lane. you will need an extra few minutes to get through this back up. it should be cleared very shortly a quiet morning as we had to the bay bridge no metering lights for the west bound ride as we have been keeping a close eye on the metering lights caltran has been doing a great job so far this week in managing the traffic flow at the toll plaza at the san mateo bridge still a good ride in the west bound direction it is possible we will see lighter than usual traffic still a few cars to or emerging from the fog on agua golden gate bridge >> families of the seven day area fishermen there's still missing are waiting to hear word of their loved ones. the accident happened in the sea of cortez and the boat capsized write off this island here this is out of where they left in san felipe de you and see the view from the air there's continuing their search today debris has been found and i hope this bill all t

a big clean up to do. a fire broke out at daly city's skyline elementary school on christian avenue. this happened about 11:30 last night. just look at the pictures. the portable classroom went up in flames. the damage includes the building itself, everything inside, books, chairs, audio- visual equipment. took firefighters about 15 minutes to put it out. authorities don't know what started the fire but it apparently started outside of the portable building. no word of any injuries and students by the way return to school on august 17th. >>> meantime firefighters say an overnight house fire in san francisco caused about $350,000 damage. this fire started just before 2:30 this morning at a home on melrose avenue. the flames then spread to a second house. took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain that one alarm fire. no injuries have been reported. authorities think the fire started in the living room of the first house, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >>> the book written by kidnap victim jaycee dugard does not go on sale for another day but it is already

below average. system kind of rotating around the big old low up in oregon is right there might produce more than just some low clouds for mendocino county and lake county. possible mostly cloudy skies later on as the tail end of that system kind of swings by. it's also not only giving low clouds but any time you get a little system coming in that enhances the drizzle. a lot of 50s out there with local drizzle and temperatures even with the overcast it's cool. and there's a no doubt about it sea breeze. boot scooting it all the way out to the sacramento valley. temperatures out there have come way down as well. that's pretty impressive system for this time of year. i mean last in june we had two of those systems that came down and visited us, gave us rain. remember rain beginning in june end of june. this time of year it's almost a miracle it makes it that far. the end result for us is a lot of low clouds and drizzle. very, very cool pattern for july. afternoon highs 50s 60s 70s i did go with one 80 that was clear lake but i almost went 79 there. and there will be 60s and 70s in between

warmer inland on the weekend but not a big jump up. temperatures i think will just recover and get back into the 80s. by the coast i still think 50s and 60s. system moved into the pacific northwest actually settled into oregon and the southern end of that has just been sweeping in low clouds. you can see how they bank up. they'll be a decrease in the low cloud deck because it's getting so cool aloft and also the inland temperatures have been plunging there's really not a lot to support it but it's still there. and every wind direction is almost out of the west or southwest. the delta breeze howling all the way to sacramento. two 60s, san jose and san jose state. but upper 50s and mid-50s. that system continues to carve itself out right out of the portland. for this time of year that's an extremely impressive system to make it that far and have this much of an impact. low overcast drizzle fog temperatures held in check cool for july no doubt about that. today, tomorrow bottom out and then a slight increase friday as we head into the weekend. still lots of 70s in areas that should be uppe

. a big week all the way around. let's start with the case. these arrests could mean the common raise of giovanni ramirez. he was arrested in may. l.a.'s police chief at the time said very emphatically this was the man who beat stow. so l.a.'s mayor's office tells the l.a. times they are obviously going to need an explanation. now an anonymous police source say two people have been arrested. >> we were just waiting, kind of like everybody else. we know they have a big job to do and a lot of work ahead of them. we are putting all our faith in the lapd right now. >> this wouldn't mean ramirez would go free. he is serving time for a parole violation. this is a good example of why people shouldn't rush to judgment. we don't know what led them to these two people. we are hoping we will learn more today. as for stow's progress, according to his family's blog he has made a breakthrough and he opened his eyes and closed them on demand. when they asked him what his last name was, he mouthed the word stow. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, "abc 7 news." >>> residents in one san francisco n

at the big board to show you exactly where the fire burned. the fire burned just east of interstate 80. there is macro plastics, and this is where travis air force base is less than 2 mi. from the plastics factory. our we had about 13 fire trucks and 50 fire fighters on scene battling the blaze. is a large commercial area. fortunately this fire has been contained to that building because just next to the building is east bay fire. and we all know how flammable tires are. fortunately, the fire has been contained. >> here is a check on the weather conditions. fairfield down to the southwest of were the fire is burning, ticket to the wind speeds. it is coming from the west and going to the east. it is bad news for the air base, but good news for those in fairfield. we have definitely seen breezier conditions than this, can now our wins, the temperatures 83 degrees. the wind around the area is rather calm. typically this time of day we could get wind gust in the upper 20s or right now the winds are a little calmer. now i just snapped a picture, and you can see a little smoke in here this

. the roof started burning at 11:10 at alcatraz and king streets. it was an enormous fire. big flames coming out of that roof. it's too early to stay whether fireworks were to blame. check out these images from over in brentwood, two homes caught fire. firefighters think it was the barbecue grill, no one was hurt. the victims from one of homes had only been there about three weeks had just moved in. they had unfortunately been through this before. >> very scary. we were able to get out in time. we know the neighbors were able to help us. it was a second fire we've had. so it burned down and the fire department responded really fast >> reporter: just incredible. now check out what they were dealing with out in the county. east contra costa county, lots of grass fires, half a dozen. the skies lit up with illegal fireworks so a lot of them on the ground there were a lost fires. this is in bay point. no injuries were reported from these fires and no structures were burned but again, firefighters say it's too early whether fireworks was to blame but it would be quite a coincidence that it just ha

looks good getting up to highway 18. at 5:08 let's go to steve. >> another big fog bank out there and it's giving us also some drizzle so we have to deal with that. today will be very similar to what we had over the weekend. breezy to windy at times, already gusts to 30. about the same tomorrow, by the end of the week looks like that fog will be getting a little shallower, it does look warmer 80s and 90s coming back for us in the sacramento san joaquin valley. we keep dealing with a low coming in from the pacific west, that ramps up the fog. then high pressure in the middle of country tries to head back west but it's been trying to do that for the last two months. we have some fog in the coast, but it has no problem getting back out. everybody coast and inland 80 degrees. west south wind or a west wind when it's 27 at travis and southwest at vacaville. any time they get a south wind in this kind of a pattern that's a cool breeze. once the low kicks out, temperatures will gradually start to come up. it's a gradual the warm warm up. breezy to windy and that will be out of the west. drizzl
